Mystic Veil

Choose a deck tradition by its images and learning material, not a promise of greater power. Rider–Waite–Smith uses illustrated scenes, Marseille pip cards emphasise suit patterns, and Thoth adds its own dense symbolic vocabulary.

Choose a learning system

For beginners learning from scenes, Rider–Waite–Smith is a practical starting point because the minor cards support visual descriptions. Marseille asks for closer attention to number, suit, arrangement and the guide's reading method; it is not a deficient version of an illustrated deck. Thoth requires learning its changed titles and symbolic correspondences, so use its own guide rather than mechanically copying another system. In Rider–Waite–Smith, Strength is VIII and Justice XI; Marseille commonly reverses those numbers, while Thoth uses names such as Adjustment and Lust. Check the actual edition before matching a guide to a card.

Three visible versions of the Two of Coins

  • Rider–Waite–Smith: a person balances two coins within a looping band, with ships behind. The action invites a narrative description.

  • Conver Marseille: two coin emblems and an inscribed winding ribbon, without that balancing person. Read the actual arrangement and edition details.

  • Thoth: vertically arranged disks linked by a serpent; Crowley names the card Change. His text describes yin–yang forms, not a juggling person.

The shared number and suit do not make these pictures identical. Our encyclopedia link shows the site’s own card example; use the primary sources below to compare the historical and Thoth designs.

A common mistake

Thoth’s astrological correspondences belong to an esoteric system; they do not demonstrate more accurate predictions.

Your next step

Start with the guide for your chosen edition and keep a short glossary of changed titles and court names.

Sources and scope

The publisher and collection records establish design and attribution. Ease of learning is our practical recommendation, not a claim of superior predictive power.
