You can begin reading tarot without memorising seventy-eight definitions. Start with one specific question, describe the image and relate it to a position in the spread. A dictionary meaning is a starting point, not a sentence that automatically applies to every situation.
Choose the question and positions before drawing
What would help me approach this unfamiliar task?
Use these positions in order:
- What I can observe
- Where I hesitate
- A response I can practise
A worked example: connect each card to its position
In this fictional exercise, you are using Excel for the first time to summarise 12 orders by status. You stopped after an unsuccessful attempt. Read the three completed notes below: each separates a visible observation, a chosen interpretation and an action.
What I can observe — Page of Pentacles
Observation → the figure studies one coin. Interpretation → one small, concrete exercise is enough to start. Action → I made a practice sheet with just three orders and wrote down each status before attempting the whole list.
Where I hesitate — Two of Swords
Observation → crossed swords and a still figure suggest a pause. Interpretation → my obstacle may be an unclear rule, not inability. Action → I asked what “closed” means. For this exercise, the supervisor clarified that it means shipped, not merely paid.
A response I can practise — Strength
Observation → the calm handling of the lion suggests steadiness rather than force. Interpretation → I can retry in a smaller, timed session. Action → I spent 15 minutes practising on the three rows, then repeated the summary for all 12: five new, four in progress and three closed.
Turn the interpretation into something you can check
The fictional result is a completed status summary: 5 + 4 + 3 = 12, matching a manual check of the original rows. The card did not supply those figures; the spreadsheet and the agreed status rule did. Returning to the notes shows which action actually helped.
A mistake to avoid
Do not confuse what you see in the picture with a fact about someone else's life.
Continue with a focused next step
Keep your observation, interpretation and action as separate notes, then compare them after trying the task. If you can name a question but struggle to connect the cards to its context, practise with a personal reading and compare the reasoning. Review the available format and price before confirming a paid continuation.
