Nine of Cups is the wish granted, and the ten minutes afterwards. It is a genuinely good card: comfort, enough, the thing you wanted arriving in the shape you wanted it. But its most useful reading is a little sharper than you get what you want. It asks whether you chose the wish carefully, because you are about to find out. Most people discover the wish was a proxy — the promotion was about being taken seriously, the relationship about not being alone at Christmas — and the proxy arrives while the real thing does not. When it lands cleanly, enjoy it without irony. When it lands hollow, that is information, not ingratitude.
