The Sun

How it actually shows up

The Sun is the most straightforward card in the deck, which makes it oddly hard to read — there is no hidden layer to find. Things are working. The clarity is real, the warmth is real, the good news is actually good news. Its difficulty in practice is that people distrust it. It frequently comes up for those in the middle of something going well who are scanning for the catch, and the card's whole instruction is to stop scanning. It shows up around births, recoveries, work that has finally landed, and relationships past their difficult stretch. Reversed, it rarely means disaster; more often it marks happiness that isn't being felt — the good thing arriving at a moment when the person is too depleted to register it.

Common pairings

• The Empress — warmth and abundance together, uncomplicated by anything hidden
• The World — completion that can actually be enjoyed rather than merely survived
• The Star — recovery arriving into daylight at last
• The Lovers — a choice made openly and gladly
• The Devil — clarity landing on an attachment — the chain becomes visible
