The Lovers is misread as a romance card more than any other. It is a card about choice, and the choice is usually between two things you value rather than two people. It shows up when a decision has become impossible to defer and both options cost something real. What makes it a 'love' card is not the subject but the mechanism: you cannot decide this one by reasoning, because reasoning is what has kept you stuck. The card points at values — which version of yourself you're willing to be. In readings about actual relationships, it frequently marks the point where a partnership requires you to choose it explicitly rather than continue in it by default. Reversed, it often shows a decision made by exhaustion rather than by preference.
