The Fool

How it actually shows up

The Fool almost never arrives when you're deciding whether to leap. It arrives just after — in the week you've already handed in the notice, booked the flight, said the thing out loud. The card is less about courage than about the specific vertigo that follows a commitment you can't unmake yet. People often describe the day The Fool lands as feeling weightless in a way that's hard to distinguish from panic. That ambiguity is the card. What it asks is narrow: don't spend this stretch building a case for why the decision was reckless. You'll have evidence either way, and gathering it now only costs you the openness that made the leap possible. If it comes up while you're still deliberating, it usually means the decision has already been made somewhere below the level of argument, and the deliberation is theatre.

Common pairings

• The Tower — a leap that is being forced rather than chosen — the ground goes first, the decision second
• Death — leaving something that was already over; the freedom is real but it is not new
• Wheel of Fortune — timing you don't control meeting a willingness you do — unusually favourable
• The Devil — escape dressed as adventure; check what you are walking away from
• The World — the end of one cycle read as the start of the next, which is what it is
