How it actually shows up

The Devil is about attachment, not evil, and the traditional image makes the argument better than any commentary: the chains are loose. Whatever has you is also something you are choosing, and the card declines to let you be purely a victim of it. It lands on habits, money, and relationships that are hard to leave for reasons unrelated to love. What makes it hard is not the diagnosis but the follow-up question, which is what the arrangement is giving you — because it is giving you something, and until that is named the leaving doesn't hold. It is a frequent card in readings where the querent has already explained the situation as impossible. Reversed, it often marks the moment the chain becomes visible, which is uncomfortable and is also the only place change starts.
