Nine of Pentacles

How it actually shows up

Nine of Pentacles is enjoying something you built yourself, and the card is specific that you built it. The garden is walled, the falcon is trained, nobody handed her this. What makes it satisfying rather than smug is that the pleasure is solitary and unperformed — she is not showing the garden to anyone. In readings it often arrives for women who have finally stopped waiting for a life to begin with somebody else in it and discovered that the one they made is genuinely good. Its only shadow is the wall. Self-sufficiency built after being let down protects beautifully and admits nobody.

Common pairings

• The Empress — abundance that is enjoyed rather than counted
• Nine of Cups — the material and the emotional both landing; unusually good
• Four of Pentacles — self-sufficiency hardening into not letting anyone in
• Two of Cups — somebody is being offered a way in; the wall is your choice
• Eight of Pentacles — this is what the practice was for
