King of Wands

How it actually shows up

The King of Wands makes things happen through other people, which is a different talent from doing things well. He sees the shape of a thing early, says it aloud with enough conviction that the room rearranges around it, and is often already bored by the time it is built. At his best that vision is generous: he hands people a bigger version of themselves to live up to, and they do. Where the card fails, the certainty simply stops being examined — the room agrees because he is convincing, not because he is right, and nobody has told him the difference in years.

Common pairings

• The Magician — vision and capability in the same hands; unusually effective
• Justice — the decision is sound and will hold up to scrutiny
• The Tower — certainty about to meet something it did not account for
• Queen of Wands — a partnership of equals, or a contest — rarely anything in between
• The Hermit — the conviction needs testing alone before it is announced
