Upright Meaning

Strategic thinking is necessary now, but beware of crossing ethical lines. Not everything can be achieved through cunning alone.

Reversed Meaning

Deception — yours or others' — is coming to light. Time to face the truth and choose integrity going forward.

How it actually shows up

Seven of Swords is the shortcut nobody witnessed. It covers actual deceit — the thing taken, the story adjusted, the fact left out of a sentence that is otherwise true — but its more common form is quieter: strategy conducted alone, a plan you have not told the people it affects. Notice that the figure leaves with only some of the swords. Whatever this is, it is partial; you have taken what you could carry and will have to come back or go without. The card’s question is less moral than practical. Who are you keeping this from, and what happens to you when they find out?

Common pairings

  • The Moon — somebody is not telling the whole truth, possibly you
  • Justice — it will come out, and it will be judged exactly as it looks
  • Two of Swords — avoidance turning into concealment
  • The Magician — cleverness in the service of something you have not examined
  • King of Swords — the plan is sound; keep it to yourself only as long as necessary
